Kabeer, do not leave the Society of the Saints; walk upon this Path.
See them, and be sanctified; meet them, and chant the Name. ||130|| (Page 1371)

Bhai Bir Singh of village Shahpur, near Garhshankar was a devout follower of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. He frequently came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan to pay his homage to Sant Baba ji. Bhai ji had a goat whose milk was quite sufficient to serve the family as well as the guests coming to his house.

(The goat has the quality that it can be milked at any time when one wants, unlike the other milch cattle that can be milked only for a fixed number of times.)

The goat became a victim of theft by robbers. Bhai ji and his family tried to search for the lost goat but they were not successful. His family said to him, “Let us forget about the old goat and buy a new one.”

But Bhai ji adored his old goat. He came to Sant Baba ji to assuage his grief. But once in the Kutiya he could not speak openly. He therefore prayed in his mind, “Maharaj ji! I have lost my goat. If it is found, it will be offered by me to the Kutiya.”

Sant Baba ji asked an attendant to give him PARSAD and he left the place. When he was going towards Rama Mandi, he saw a herd of goats. His goat was also in the herd. The goat recognized its old master and leaving the herd came towards Bhai ji.

Bhai Bir Singh patted the goat and said to the owner of the herd, “This is my goat. You have stolen it. Please return it back to me otherwise I will complain about the theft to the Police.”

The owner of the herd discussed the situation with his companions and returned the goat.

Bhai ji brought the goat to the Kutiya. He came to Sant Baba ji and after paying his obeisance informed of the theft of his goat and now finding it after his prayers at the Kutiya. He requested Sant Baba ji, “Maharaj ji! With your blessings I have been able to find my goat. I had prayed here that I would bestow the goat to the Kutiya. Please accept this humble donation.”

Sant Baba ji was happy at his sincere motive but said, “What will a sadhu do with a goat?” He continued and said, “Take it back to your home. You should look after it well. Whatever milk it produces, use a part of the milk for the consumption of the family and save a portion for the langar.”

Bhai ji kept on insisting for it being accepted in donation. Sant Baba ji got irritated and said, “You want sadhus to pick up and clean the droppings of the goat.”

Bhai ji changed his mind and decided to take the goat back to his village.

The milk of a goat is normally quite low in fat and is dilute in comparison to the milk of a cow or a buffalo. One cannot therefore take out ghee from the cream of this milk. But this was no ordinary goat. It had the blessings of Sant Baba ji. Everyday it gave milk equivalent to a normal cow’s milk. Ghee could be obtained from the cream of the milk. When sufficient ghee was collected Bhai Bir Singh brought the same to the Kutiya as an offering.

Bhai ji was a true Gursikh. He had obeyed the orders of Sant Baba ji and thus became a privileged and glorified individual. The effect of finding his goat fifty kilometers away from where he had lost was such that Bhai Bir Singh and his entire family joined the force of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib by receiving the nectar of the two edged sword.

The servant serves, and obeys the Command of the Infinite Lord.
The self-willed manmukhs do not know the value of the Lord’s Command.
By the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, one is exalted; by His Hukam,
one is glorified; by His Hukam, one becomes carefree. ||12|| (Page 1054)

The progeny of the goat is still with the family of Bhai Bir Singh. The entire family of Bhai ji regularly comes to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan to pay their homage and join enthusiastically in performing Sewa.
