AMRIT PARCHAR DHARMIK DIWAN

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰ੍ਸਾਦਿ

‘Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan’ is a phrase coined by Sriman Sant Baba Gian Singh ji of Nirmal Kutia Johalan, Jalandhar. The Holy Saint of Nirmal Kutia used it for establishing Gurdwaras at different places. Before we go into the details let us first look at the background of Sikh history which led to the establishing of religious centers known as Gurdwaras.

THE SIKH RELIGION

All facets of Sikh religion are firmly attached to the ‘Guru’ (Preceptor). The centre of materialistic life or the spiritual life of a Sikh is his ‘Guru’. The true Gursikhi resides in Guru’s service, Guru’s attendance, understanding Guru’s uttered words, repeating Guru’s name, Guru’s Hymns, Guru’s order, Guru’s teaching’s and above all Guru’s praise.

Sikh religion came to this world more than five hundred years ago. Sahib Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji was the founder of Sikh faith. Guru Sahib taught the humanity about the origins of the world. They were enlightened with the real features of the Almighty. Individuals who had no knowledge about Spirituality were shown the right path. The unethical religious practices in the society were affronted without fear or pressure of any sort. He brought awareness of the misdeeds to the rulers and even the powerful kings. Faith in Almighty, high wisdom and powers of integrity were intuitively raised in human beings from within.

The sermons to cool the atmosphere could not be given to burning world by sitting at one place. Guru Sahib undertook four Udasis (long travels) in different directions and went from place to place to remove the misgivings of those gone astray. Sometimes he preached individuals and many a times collectively enlightening wise thoughts, benefits of cooperation and giving a new appearance to the future of the individuals.

Where ever Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji travelled he connected with the hearts of people through singing praises of the Almighty. Deep philosophy enriched in the words of songs melt even the unyielding minds. Singing or Keertan (devotional singing) was the media adopted so that Guru Sahib could express his feelings, his prayers and his glory for the Lord to reach the audience easily.

Keertan and Sangat

The musical devotional verses only expressed the traits of the Lord, knowledge about the shortcomings of the people, trying to remove the same and impressed individuals to connect to the Lord. Since there was no adulteration, no greed, no need for showing oneself as high, no profit involved, the people joined the congregation willingly and became part of a Sadhu’s sangat (Holy congregation).

The curious learner was indeed impressed on listening the words of a truthful and a great man. Anyone coming into the fold understood and treasured the spiritual strength of Guru Sahib. When the number of people coming to the fold of Guru Sahib increased, they became the part of Guru’s sangat (religious congregation)

Dirty minds get cleaned in Guru’s sangat. Not only animals but evil spirits also turn out to be angels. Virtues are obtained happily from Guru’s sangat. Guru’s sangat can be compared to the sandalwood tree. The plants growing near a sandal wood tree emanate the smell of sandal. The participants of the sangat are influenced by the Guru and get glorified by looking at each other’s spiritual achievements.

"ਕਬੀਰ ਚੰਦਨ ਕਾ ਬਿਰਵਾ ਭਲਾ ਬੇੜਿਉ ਢਾਕ ਪਲਾਸ ||
ਉਇ ਭੀ ਚੰਦਨ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਬਸਹਿ ਜੋ ਚੰਦਨ ਪਾਸ ||"

According to Bhai Gurdas ji copper on being mixed with different metals acts differently. Similarly an individual also accepts the affect of the sangat.

People joined in the congregation of Guru Nanak Sahib and Guru Sahib ensured that this congregation became a part of the lives of his sangat. He established places for such a gathering. Guru Sahib’s sangat came to be identified with the gathering at that place. The devotee Sikhs of Guru Sahib also established many places for such gatherings so that they could carry on with the standards established by their Guru. The places established during those times are well known even today. ‘Nanak Matta’ in UP, ‘Nanak Varha’ in Surat, Mirzapur in South, Hyderabad East, Chittagong, Adilabad in Deccan, Dhubri in Assam are known places.

According to Bhai Gurdas ji the system of undertaking Keertan in houses of the Sikhs started during the times of Guru Nanak Dev ji.

"ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਧਰਮਸਾਲ
ਹੋਵੈ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸੋਆ|"
(ਵਾਰ ੧ ਪਉੜੀ ੨੭)

Bhai Gurdas ji wrote this Vaar during the times of either the fifth or Sixth Guru Sahib. The word ‘Dharamsaal’ was used for a religious place during the times of Guru Sahib.

The third Guru Sahib Sahib Sri Guru Amardas ji established 22 preaching centers and 52 sub preaching centers. Though every sub preaching center had its own Chief but he was a rung junior to that of the Chief of a preaching center. All these centers were places of religious preaching’s and had Dharamsaals. Holy hymns were sung daily at these centers.

The Dharamsaals being established at the main residential places of Guru Sahib’s was thus a must. Dharamsaals were established at Kartarpur the town made Holy by Guru Nanak Dev ji, Khadoor Sahib of Guru Angad Dev ji, Goindwal of Guru Amardas ji, and ‘Guru Ka Chak’ of Guru Ramdas ji.

Adi Granth

The fifth Master, Guru Arjan Dev ji collected the Baani’s (Holy Hymns) uttered by Guru Nanak Dev ji, Guru Angad Dev ji, Guru Amardas ji, Guru Ramdas ji and also his own Baani’s. These Guru Baani’s along with the hymns of 16 Indian Bhagats (Pious men) were compiled in the form of a Holy Scripture. This Holy Book was named as ‘Adi Granth’. Guru Arjan Dev ji did not find difference in the hymns of the Bhagats irrespective of whether he was a Muslim or a Hindu. In 1604 Guru Sahib completed the construction of Harmandir Sahib in Sri Amritsar. On 16th August 1604 Adi Granth (Sri Guru Granth Sahib) was ceremoniously installed in the Harmandir Sahib.

Recitation of Gurbani, recitation of Gurbani Keertan became a part of every established religious place. The charge of the religious place was given to a responsible individual. Baba Budha ji was given the service of a Head Priest by Guru Sahib at the time of placing the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib. Baba Budha ji continued with this service till 16th November 1631. Bhai Gurdas ji followed in his footsteps and served at Harmandir Sahib till 24th August 1636. Important individuals heading these places showed that Guru Sahib wanted honest men with morals, ethics, knowledge of Holy Hymns and complete understanding of Sikhism.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji spread message about the Almighty to the masses by singing the holy hymns while these holy hymns were compiled by Guru Arjan Dev ji in the form of a Sacred book. Guru Sahib wanted that his Sikhs should recite the holy hymns or listening to the recitation, understand the deep meaning and benefit from the love for the Lord. A new chapter in the history of Sikhs was brought about with the placing of the Holy Scripture in Harmandir Sahib.

The tenth Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji initiated his Sikhs into Khalsa (A Baptized Sikh) in the year 1699 by administering them with the nectar prepared with the two edged sword and recitation of five Baani’s. Five beloveds were created by baptism in this manner on this historic day. These five were of different castes considered high and low in the social order. Guru Sahib made them equal and then requested his five beloveds to bless him with the sacred nectar. By this action, Guru Sahib declared to the world and also his own devotees that all Sikhs were just like him apart from being equal. The question of a caste system does not exist in Guru Sahib’s Khalsa. The rich, poor or persons at high places were on the same pedestal.

Bhai Mania ji, a renowned Sikh scholar was blessed by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, with the holy nectar and made the famous Bhai Mani Singh ji. Bhai Mani Singh ji was sent to Sri Amritsar to serve as the head priest of Sri Harmandir Sahib. He served there for 35 years.

BANI GURU

The tenth Guru Sahib on 2nd Katak Samvat 1765 while in Nanded (Maharashtra) established Guru Gaddi to Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. The tenth Guru Sahib thus enjoined the Sikh Panth to have faith in the Shabad Guru and conveyed the unflinching message that Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji was the Guru of all Sikhs for all times to come.

Gurbani in Sri Guru Granth Sahib has supernatural powers that relieve all kinds of pains by its blissful contact with the mind of an individual. Gurbani stabilizes the wandering mind, removes mental pains, agonies, troubles and distress of the individual. It solves the problems of the conscience. Gurbani has the power to melt the most rigid hearts. It raises the intense longing for meeting the Lord, the true pangs of separation and is the prayer for the tranquility of all humanity.

The essence of Gurdwara

The Holy book Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji was compiled by Guru Sahib for the welfare of the Sikh Religion and was given the status of a Guru by the Tenth Guru Sahib. The blessings of ‘Shabad Guru’ were given to the Sikhs by the Tenth Guru.

The Sikhs in turn also respected the Holy Book. Buildings were built to house the Holy Book and these came to be known as Gurdwaras. Gurdwaras were also built at places where Guru Sahib’s Holy feet had been placed. These places were visited by the devotee Sikhs and considered Sikh pilgrimage centers. With the blessings of the Guru, water tanks, pools, ponds and wells were dug at places where there was a shortage of water. It became apparent that the Sikh sangat collected on Sangrand (Full moon day) and Maghi (No moon day) at these Holy places and sang the Holy hymns.

A place where Guru Sahib was present was rightly called as the house of Guru. This was the place from where a true Sikh found the way to unite with the Lord. This is the reason when a Sikh sits in the Gurdwara he sniffs the fragrance of spirituality. The Guru is no doubt present in a genuine sangat.

The established Gurdwaras can be divided in two categories. Those that are historic and the others established by the local people. Most of the historical Gurdwaras are being looked after by Shromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. The others are looked after by the local committees.

Some Gurdwaras were established by Saints from the Udasin and Nirmala sects. Sriman Sant Baba Harnam Singh ji of Jian established many Gurdwaras in various towns and he was the one who laid the foundation stone for Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib, the birth place of Khalsa.

Gurdwaras in present times

The present day Gurdwaras uphold the preaching’s and knowledge about the soul as propagated by Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and the subsequent Gur Sahib’s. Sangat is able to follow the right direction to meet the Lord. It is a must for every Sikh to follow the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, recite the Holy Hymns, listen to discourses on Gurbani, serve the mankind, undertake Simran (Meditation upon God’s Name), to ultimately merge in the Lord and fulfill their real obligation of coming to this world.

The Sikh Gurdwara became a school for the students, knowledgeable instructions for the self-analysts, hospital for the patients, food for the hungry, a fort for the women to save their honor, and resting place for the travelers. The Gurdwaras are not only the learning place for the Sikhs but have also become part of their social life. Families collect for marriages, other happy and sad occasions.

Special service of Mahapurakhs of Nirmal Kutia Johalan

Guru’s Sikh will have to become humble servants of the Guru to be blessed by the Lord. He will have to keep the instructions of the Guru in his mind at all times. He would be able to achieve everything by keeping the Name of the Lord in mind, and serving selflessly. Service brings in humbleness in a Sikh. Humility burns away the pride and the servant does not face any impediments that cannot be easily crossed.

Sriman Sant Baba Basant Singh ji the founder of Nirmal Kutia Johalan had reached higher levels of spiritual life. His eyes were always searching for his preceptor. His ears were filled with the juices of the Holy Hymns and his words were entwined with the Baani of Guru Sahib. He was the disciple of Sriman Sant Baba Harnam Singh ji of Jian and followed his Gurdev’s instructions. He was involved in penance and austerities in order to erase the self. He attained the knowledge of Brahma in his youth. He was ordered by his Gurudev to propagate the Sikh religion among the masses and bring about awareness in the Sikhs through the dispersion of nectar of the two edged sword. He followed the instructions and in the beginning of the 20th century started the service in a very efficient manner. He travelled from village to village, town to town and enjoined the masses to Gurbani and kept the ideals of Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji in high esteem. Where ever he observed the need, he established Gurdwaras with the help of local people.

After many years of serving the people in different areas, he established his place at Nirmal Kutia Johalan. From 1928 to 1971 till his last breath he remained at this place, propagated the sermons of Guru Sahib and motivated people to adopt the Khalsa way of life. In the beginning he remained in a thatched hut and performed his austerities which later blossomed into various buildings.

Meditation on the Name of Lord, Gurbani Keertan and discourses became a part of daily life at the Kutia of Sriman Sant Baba Basant Singh ji. He did not have to work hard to impress the Sikhs into accepting the nectar for becoming Khalsa as his soft words carried a lot of spiritual depth. He remained disciplined himself and motivated others to remain firm in the prescribed discipline of The Tenth Guru Sahib.

The tradition of discipline set up by Sant Baba Basant Singh ji was continued by the subsequent Chiefs of the Kutia and is still prevalent. It was the wish of Sant Baba ji that the devotee should immensely enjoy the lap of Guru Sahib, which desire still continues in the present Holy Saints.

At various towns and villages, the Holy Saints established Gurdwaras, Schools, College, Dharamsaals, marriage places by motivating the people and joined themselves in the social and religious service. Why was there a need to do all this? The plant of Sikhi that was withering away had to be given new life for it to look pleasing. The Holy Saints desired that people should spend their life efficiently by joining the congregation where only Gurbani was the theme. Every individual Sikh should follow the tenets of Sikhism as established by Guru Sahib, follow the path of truth, remain away from intoxicants, and spend their life by sincerely working for their living.

Sriman Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and Sriman Sant Baba HArbhajan Singh ‘Virakat’ ji who succeeded Sriman Sant Baba Basant Singh ji also established Gurdwaras during their time in villages and cities so that the devotee Sikhs could be blessed by Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. At many places after construction of the building of the Gurdwaras, the charge for looking after the day to day affairs at these places was handed over by the Holy Saints to baptized Sikhs from among the sangat as per the request of the local people. The overall supervision however, remained with the Holy Saints of the Kutia. These Gurdwaras was given a new name ‘Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan’. The background of this particular choice of name is given below.

Background of ‘Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan’

The sangat of Delhi started celebrating the anniversary of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj, whose soul merged with the Supreme Lord in 1971, from 1972 onwards. The permission for celebrating the anniversary was accorded by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji, the then Chief Saint of the Kutia. The anniversary was celebrated by the sangat in the presence of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji, in the house of Thekedar Piara Singh ji, a beloved devotee of Sant ji Maharaj. The sangat of Delhi continue celebrating the anniversary though now it is a combined anniversary of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji, Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and Sant Baba Harbhajan Singh ‘Virakat’ ji. On the third and last day of anniversary celebrations, the Holy nectar is prepared and distributed to the seekers. A Diwan is organized on the last day after the Bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib. The sangat is impressed to follow the path of truth.

Sriman Sant Baba Gian Singh ji Maharaj also asked the sangat of Delhi to collect after 15 days on a Sunday in a religious congregation. During this congregation, sangat listens to spiritual discourses and singing of Holy Hymns. Community langar is served to all.

The instructions were followed in letter and spirit. The sangat however felt that there should be some name given to this gathering. In 1976 some members of the sangat went to Jalandhar with this in mind and requested Sant Baba Gian Singh ji for naming the congregation in Delhi. Sant ji Maharaj did not reply. He instead got up and started walking. Sant ji Maharaj went for a daily walk outside the Kutia. That particular day Sant ji Maharaj started walking on the road towards Patara village. The sangat followed him. He quietly walked till the Railway line near Bolina Doaba Railway Station. (Railway line is from Jalandhar Cantt till Hoshiarpur). Here he stopped and leaned on his stick. He said, “The congregation is religious and the discourses inspire the Sikhs to seek the nectar of the two edged sword. It would be proper to name such a congregation as ‘AMRIT PARCHAR DHARMIK DIWAN’.”

The sangat was very happy at this announcement, thanked Sant ji Maharaj and welcomed the decision by raising the Sikh Slogan ‘Bole so Nihal Sat Sri Akal’. Since then the Delhi congregation has been known as ‘Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan’. The congregation is continuing even today and the anniversary celebrations are also conducted yearly under the specific instructions of the present Chief of the Kutia Sant Baba Jit Singh ji.

Sriman Sant Baba Gian Singh ji Maharaj coining this phrase was indeed a blessing for the devotees. This name was later given to the Gurdwaras established under the aegis of the Kutia. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji established the following Gurdwaras under the banner of ‘Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan’

These nine Gurdwaras were established by Sriman Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and Sriman Sant Baba Harbhajan Singh ‘Virakat’ ji. These were constructed under their orders and are being run by the local baptized sangat as per the instructions now of the present Chief and his assistant. Recently in February 2011, Sant Baba Jit Singh ji toured the cities of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On the request of the local sangat of Gardhia Munshi, the Gurdwara here was named Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Gardhia Munshi, Jaspur (Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand). A brief video of this function can be seen on the website.

The management, upkeep and service in Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan Gurdwaras and also by the Jatha in Delhi are being performed as per the orders of the Holy Saints of Nirmal Kutia Johalan. A Management Committee comprising of five members from the local sangat is constituted by the Holy Saints to look after the day to day administration at all these places.

In order to gain the actual knowledge of metaphysical, it is a must for every Sikh to participate in sangat. The sangat of Mahapurakhs leads to the knowledge of innermost self. Such knowledge is not easy and only the fortunate ones are able to acquire it.

Dr Mehal Singh and S Surjan Singh Havaldar were brothers of village Bhatolian, District Hoshiarpur, who sold their land in the village and purchased cheaper land in Uttar Pradesh. They purchased six tracts of 25 acres land each. Both the brothers had full respect for Sriman Sant Baba Basant Singh ji, the founder of Nirmal Kutia Johalan, Jalandhar. Sant Baba ji had meditated on the outskirts of Bhatolian village when he was young.

The selfless love of the two devotees had its impact and in the year 1952 Sriman Sant Baba Basant Singh ji travelled to Uttar Pradesh. The Holy nectar was prepared for the seekers at many places. He then stayed in the area of Kanshipur in a village named Munshi Gardhia. This is such a village in UP where all the families are Sikhs. At present this village has come under the administration of Uttarakhand state and falls within the district of Udham Singh Nagar.

This area was earlier a complete jungle and wild animals like lions, cheetahs were often seen. The hard work of the villagers can be seen in the green belt now. There was a shortage of water for the people of the village. Sant ji Maharaj asked Dr Mehal Singh, “We will accept water from your house once you dug a well for fulfilling the needs of the villagers for water”.

The devotees had so much love for the Holy Saint and his words that in no time a well was dug in the fields which became a source of water for the villagers.

River Tumri flowed nearby. It was though less wide but was very deep. Sriman Sant Baba Basant Singh ji meditated on its banks. Sant Baba ji stayed in the village for three months. Everyday a congregation was held. Preaching’s were carried out, people were impressed to follow the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji and join the Khalsa force of the Tenth Guru Sahib

Dr Mehal Singh prepared a big thatched hut which required a long bamboo for support. This heavy and long bamboo could not be lifted for placement at the right place. They tried but failed all the time. Sant ji Maharaj sitting nearby was observing this scene. Ultimately Sant ji Maharaj pointed his finger at the bamboo and the same was easily placed to support the hut. The sangat there fell on the feet of Sant ji Maharaj to thank him.

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji toured the state of UP many a times. He also spread Sikhism in different places. While in Gardhia Munshi many seekers were baptized. He also laid a foundation stone for building a Gurdwara. At present a beautiful Gurdwara exists and the devotees visit the Gurdwara Sahib. Every Sunday a congregation is held and people join the sangat. Hola Mohalla is a special occasion and is celebrated very fondly. This is well known in the area.

The devotees from UP and Uttarakhand are regular visitors to the Kutia and come in groups during the three annual anniversary celebrations. They join as priests and undertake other different services during their stay at the Kutia. In January 2011, the present Holy Saints of the Kutia took along with them many Granthi’s from UP and Uttarakhand to Hazur Sahib for undertaking the service of Akhand Paths at the Holy place. This service was especially given to the Holy Saints by Sachkhand Board and the five beloveds of the Takhat. The sangat of Kutia successfully completed the continued recitation of 225 Paths of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

While there at Hazur Sahib the devotees of the two states requested the Holy Saints to visit them. In February 2011, Sant Baba Jit Singh ji and sangat went for a tour of UP and Uttarakhand. Diwan was organized almost daily at different places and seekers were baptized. The devotees of Gardhia Munshi, Jaspur, the town that now falls under the Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand, requested the Holy Saints to give a name to the Gurdwara there. During the Diwan, Sant Baba Jit Singh ji announced the name of the Gurdwara as, “Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Gardhia Munshi. The devotees welcomed this name by raising the Sikh slogan ‘Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal’. 61 seekers were baptized during the function there with the inspiration of the Holy Saints.

CHANDIGARH

Kabeer, nothing is mine within myself. Whatever there is, is Yours, O Lord.

People, who are able not only to converge their thoughts for the Almighty in the manner mentioned in the above verse, but also practically follow what they say, are rare in this world. There are few who appreciate the fact as reality. Anyone who does come in this category is a person truly blessed by the Lord almighty.

Sardar Gurcharan Singh son of Sardar Karam Singh lived in England. He had full respect for Holy Saints of Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji Maharaj’s blessings were always with him. This was the reason that he was passing his life cheerfully.

Whenever he came to India, the attraction of Johalan was so powerful that he forgot all about his personal chores and immediately visited the Kutiya to pay homage to the revered saint.

He had constructed a house in Mohali, Chandigarh for his stay in India. He yearned for Sant Maharaj ji’s Holy feet to bless his house and desired the flow of Amrit Gurbani be carried out. He made up his mind and after consulting his family members, he executed a registered deed and the Mohali property was transferred in the name of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji.

He came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan to pay his homage to Sant Maharaj ji who had showered all his blessings on him. Sant Maharaj ji was sitting with a smile on his face. Sardar Gurcharan Singh touched the feet of Sant Maharaj ji. Sant Maharaj ji recognized him and asked him, “Sahib! Is everything all right in England?”

Sardar ji replied, “Yes, Maharaj! With your blessings everything is fine.”

Sant Maharaj ji said, “Sahib! God is really merciful and compassionate.”

Thereafter there was complete silence for some time till Sardar ji got up from where he was sitting and came to Sant Maharaj ji. He bowed at the feet of the Holy saint and then placed the papers containing the registered deed of his Property No. 1260, Phase 9, Mohali, along with the keys of the house in front of Sant Maharaj ji.

Sant Maharaj ji asked him, “Sahib! What is this?”

Sardar ji tried to assimilate all his humility and said, “Patshah! The house at Mohali is your blessings. It is not being used and does not serve the purpose for which it was constructed. I request that the sangat bless it with its presence. Please make this house really honored with your blessings.”

Sant Maharaj ji said, “Kothis are meant for Sahibs. Saints are happy and contented living in a hut.”

Sant Maharaj ji had no inclination towards worldly comforts and things. He was a true ascetic and greed was nowhere near him. The devotees in the sangat sitting there felt that Sardar ji had made a big mistake by raising this issue before Sant Maharaj ji. Some of them felt that Sardar ji would have to face the wrath of Sant Maharaj ji now.

There is a vast difference between the thoughts of ordinary people vis-à-vis a complete ascetic.

Sardar ji again requested, “Please accept my humble request and bless me further with your kindness. Please bless the house by accepting these papers.”

Sant Maharaj ji did not reply and the environment became serene and quiet. Sant Maharaj ji’s hands were busy in straightening the folds of the scarf. ‘Virakat’ ji Maharaj was sitting beside him. The moment of blessing was around.

Braham Giani Sant Maharaj ji said, “A lion once lived in a cave in a jungle. One day the lion came out of his den and went in search for its prey. During his absence, three Holy saints while passing the cave thought of resting for some time. Considering the cave to be safe, they entered to spend the night. All of them were tired and stretched to relax. They immediately fell asleep.

After some time the lion came back with his belly full. He soon became aware of the wandering saints resting in his den. The Almighty made him conscious of their presence and the lion thought that he should not disturb the sleeping saints. He came outside and slept in the open. During the night there was snowfall in the area and the lion was completely covered with it. The lion could not survive the cold and died.

In the morning, unaware of the happening, the saints left the cave and started on their journey.

The lion appeared in the court of Dharamraj, after his death for the judgment of his deeds on earth. Dharamraj said, “O Lion! You are great. Your accounts show that your one deed on earth was really extraordinary.”

The lion however, was astonished on hearing these words.

Dharamraj said, “I am talking about the incident when three Holy persons resting in your den, were not disturbed and you allowed them to sleep peacefully. You slept outside your den. You have been blessed because of such a good conduct towards the Holy men. Your life as a lion has now ended and you now step into a new life because of this one deed. You will now take birth as a very wealthy person. You will be the owner of lot of wealth, land and many servants to look after you. After rebirth, the lion received all such benefits”. With these words Sant Maharaj ji ended his story.

Sant Maharaj ji then said to ‘Virakat’ ji, “The devotees of Chandigarh have tremendous love for Guru Sahib. What do you suggest should be done in this case?”

Virakat ji Maharaj replied, “Maharaj! Your words are true. Sardar Gurdit Singh of Chandigarh is present here in the sangat. His advice may kindly be taken.”

Sant Maharaj ji said, “All right! That will be good.”

Sardar Gurdit Singh’s suggestion was sought and he said, “Maharaj ji! Whatever is your order, the same will be followed.”

Sant Maharaj ji said, “Gurdit Singh! Arrange a Nishan Sahib and install it in the premises, indicating the place to be of Sikh worship. The Holy Book of Sri Guru Granth Sahib should be ritually placed in a room in the house.”

Sardar Gurdit Singh said, “Your order would be carried out, Maharaj ji. It will be better if you grace the auspicious occasion with your presence.”

Sant Maharaj ji agreed.

Sardar Gurcharan Singh was a relieved man. He was happy at the outcome. He prayed in his mind, “The life of the lion, an animal was made fortunate, please be kind to me also.”

A Gurdwara was established in the house of Sardar Gurcharan Singh. It was inaugurated by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji Maharaj. Virakat ji Maharaj was also present on the occasion.

Sant Maharaj ji said on this occasion, “Where ever there is the Holy Book of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the recitation of the Name of the Lord will be carried out by the sangat. The Holy Hymns will be read and sung by the devotees of Guru Nanak.”

The devotion and love of Sardar Gurcharan Singh has today converted his house into a temple and it is now visited daily by the sangat.

A five-member committee looks after the administration of the Gurdwara. At present these five members are carrying on the work with great enthusiasm under the orders of the Holy Saints of Kutia. The discipline followed here is the same as that of Nirmal Kutia Johalan. Only a baptized Ragi, Dhadhi or a scholar can perform on the stage. He has to be a Gursikh following the discipline of Guru Sahib with a flowing beard. He should not be wearing any ring, chain in the neck or any other ornament. He should be wearing a simple dress. He should not use derogatory words against anyone, talk about politics, not condemn any religion and confine his discourse to Gurbani, Sikh history and the virtues of Guru Sahib.

The Guru ka langar would be prepared by Gursikh ladies. The langar would be served to the sangat sitting in rows. The sangat would recite ‘Satnam-Waheguru’ during the distribution of langar. Only baptized Sikhs would distribute the langar and after the langar was distributed to all those sitting, the sangat would start eating after raising the slogan ‘Waheguru ji ka Khalsa! Waheguru ji ki Fateh’.

Akhand Paths are carried out regularly in the Gurdwara. People participate to listen to the Keertan on the first Sunday of the month. It has now become a routine that the Bhog of Sehaj/Akhand Path is undertaken after every fifteen days. The sangat celebrates the anniversary of the earlier Holy Saints of the Kutia after taking permission from the present saints. Sant Baba Jit Singh ji joins the anniversary celebrations and the Diwan after the Bhog of Akhand Path Sahib.

Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Sahota Farm

Guru Amardas Nagar, Fatehgarh, Hoshiarpur

Sardar S S Sahota, of Canada was a devotee of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji. He made it a point to come for the darshan of Sant Baba ji before doing anything else when he visited India. Mr Sahota constructed a house in Guru Amardas Nagar, Fatehgarh, in Hoshiarpur. There was no Gurdwara Sahib in the colony while the Sikhs living there wanted to have a center for Gursikhi. He submitted the desire of the sangat before Sant Baba Gian Singh ji, when once he visited the Kutia.

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji visited the colony and his house. Sant Baba ji traversed the whole house on the request of Mr Sahota. Sant Baba ji came out of the house and stopped at an open space. Sant Baba pointed out with his stick, “Sahota Sahib, The Guru’s abode be made here. The sangat of the colony would also be able to have easy access.”

Sahota Sahib said, “As you say, Maharaj”.

Sant Baba ji suggested, “The name of the Gurdwara should be ‘Gurdwara Amrit PArchar Dharmik Diwan”.

Mr Sahota was very happy and constructed the building of the Gurdwara Sahib with all enthusiasm and named it as per the advice of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji.

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and Sant Baba Harbhajan Singh ‘Virakat’ ji visted the Gurdwara regularly during their time. Now Gurmat Samagam is held at the Gurdwara Sahib in the presence of Sant Baba Jit Singh ji.

The love of Guru Sahib and Gurbani of Sahota Sahib has been instrumental in the local people also visiting the Gurdwara regularly.

Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Kesopur

The devotees of village Kesopur remained within the directives of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji. They always wanted to serve Sant ji Maharaj with their minds, body and wealth. The villagers decided once that they should have a Gurdwara in their village. They felt that there was a dire need for spread of Sikhism. People will join the Keertan in the Gurdwara, spend some time at the feet of Guru Sahib and efficaciously spend their life. They collected together and came to share this view with Sant Baba Gian Singh ji, the head of Nirmal Kutia at that time.

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji was very happy to listen to their submission. He advised them the way to proceed with the work, undertaking the work collectively and with only service towards Guru Sahib in the heart.

The devotees were very happy at the guidance and said, “We have been blessed. Please give us a date when you would be available for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Gurdwara”.

Sant Baba ji said, “You should first get ready for the ceremony. The blessings of Guru Sahib are with you and the work would be completed with His Grace.”

The foundation stone of the Gurdwara was laid on 27th April 1999 by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and Sant Baba Harbhajan Singh ji. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji named the Gurdwara Sahib as ‘Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan’.

There is a big hall in the Gurdwara Sahib where Sri Guru Granth Sahib has been ceremoniously placed. The villagers conduct all their religious functions in the Gurdwara. Akhand Paths continue with the request of the devotees. The day to day affairs of Gurdwara Sahib are being looked after by a group of baptized Sikhs.

Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Chomo

Chomo village near Adampur was dominated by Rian Muslims before the partition of the country. The Muslims had built a beautiful Masjid for their prayers. During the partition days all the Muslims left the village.

It village had lot of agricultural land. The village gave a deserted look till the time Sikhs settled here for agriculture. Sri Guru Granth Sahib was placed in the Masjid and the Masjid became the Gurdwara for the Sikhs. With the passage of time the Gurdwara building became weak. Sangat collected in the Gurdwara. During rainy season the roof leaked and the religious get together was disturbed. The elders of the village decided to construct a new building for Gurdwara Sahib. Bhai Inderjit Singh of the village was a baptized Sikh who was a devotee of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and was a frequent visitor to the Kutia for performing selfless service. Bhai Inderjit Singh had seen Sant Baba Gian Singh ji in Canada and become a devotee of the Kutia. He was made a member of the committee by the local people of the village. There were three baptized Sikhs in the committee whereas two were non-baptized.

Bhai Inderjit Singh made it clear to the committee that the foundation stone for the Gurdwara Sahib could not be laid by some leader or Minister but should be graced with the Holy Hands of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji of Nirmal Kutia Johalan. The other members agreed to this advice.

Once Bhai Inderjit Singh visited the Gurdwara at Sagranwali with the sangat of Kutia. The langar hall building was being constructed at that time. He came to know that Sardar Jarnail Singh SDO had prepared the building plans of the hall. He was known to S Jarnail Singh and talked about the construction of Gurdwara Sahib in his village. S Jarnail Singh suggested that the elders of the village should first go and visit three or four Gurdwaras constructed under the guidance of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji of Nirmal Kutia Johalan and then decide about the building plans of the Gurdwara in their village. He suggested the names of Gurdwaras at Bhojowal, Sagranwali, Jandu Singha, Deep Nagar and Phillaur.

Around twelve Sikhs of the village, one day, visited the Jandu Singha Gurdwara, being closest to their village. The administrators of Jandu Singha Gurdwara Sahib welcomed the team and informed that a sum of Rs 18 lakhs had been spent on the construction. Sardar Harbhajan Singh a member of the team on listening to the amount said, “We have just Rs1.25 lakhs or could arrange another twenty five thousand. We will not be able to construct such a building.”

The Jandu Singha people informed, “Sardar ji! Your base is quite strong. We had started this work when we had just twenty five thousand rupees.”

The curiosity arose among the members as to how the huge money was spent thereafter and raised this pertinent question. They were informed, “We do not have any wisdom to comprehend this aspect. It is only the blessing of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji.”

The team members were served milk and snacks and from there they went to Bhojowal to see the building of the Gurdwara in that village. They were perplexed to see the two halls of the Gurdwara built above the street. They were informed that a sum of Rs 16 lakhs had been spent on the construction and they had started with a sum of fifty thousand rupees only. Thereafter, the shower of money was the blessing of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji.

The members of the team were astonished to hear the name of the Holy Saint and felt that he must be a Spiritual Soul alleviating the needs of humble beings. They did not feel like visiting any other Gurdwara and asked S Inderjit Singh to take them to Nirmal Kutia Johalan for the darshan of the Holy Saint. It was late evening and they had to return back to the village as the door of Kutia had been closed.

The group visited Sant Baba ji alongwith S Jarnail Singh. This was in September 1995. S Jarnail Singh shared the objective of Chomo devotees to Sant Baba ji. He requested the Holy Saint to bless the villagers with the approval for constructing the Gurdwara Sahib building.

Sant Baba Harbhajan Singh ‘Virakat’ ji sitting close by said, “SDO Sahib! You are choosing to become a mediator for the villagers. Do not step back from the commitment.”

Before SDO Sahib could respond, Sant Baba Gian Singh ji said, “Both of them (S Inderjit Singh and S Jarnail Singh) are old acquaintances and would not back out.” Virakat ji Maharaj acknowledged the words of Sant Baba ji.

Sant Baba ji said to SDO Sahib, “Chomo is a big village in the area and therefore the building of the Gurdwara should be quite spacious.”

The sangat of Chomo thanked the Holy Saint and were relieved to hear the kind words. They now knew that the Gurdwara Sahib would get constructed in the village. When the building plans were ready, they came to Kutia to seek the blessings of Mahapurakh. Sant Baba ji advised, “The present construction should be destroyed with all humility. No one should carry any brick or even a handful of the soil from the place to their homes. The soil there was very sacred and no one will be able to bear its impact. All the soil and the bricks should be spread on a common land in the village.”

The sangat gave their word to Sant Baba ji in this regard. The sangat respected the words of Sant Baba ji. The whole place was cleared of all debris. The foundation was dug quite deep. At many places Sant Baba ji, who was personally supervising the work, asked not to dig any foundation. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji laid the foundation stone of the building in January 1996.

Many people of the village joined in at the time of laying the roof. Outside labor was also involved. The roof laying could not be completed till late evening. The mason was very tired. He said he could not carry on further. The villagers advised not to leave the work half done. Search for another mason at that hour started. Two masons were found. They helped in completion of the roof laying. They worked very fast. The appointed President and some others were very impressed with their work and suggested that the two masons be paid full day’s salary.

After finishing the work the sangat was involved in washing their hands and feet. When they collected after that, the masons were missing from the group. Search for the two masons was carried out but could not be found. The sangat was astonished when all their efforts were futile. The masons had left without taking any payment. The people felt that the service of a religious place is quite different and the completion of the laying of roof by the two masons was due to the blessings of Sant Baba ji.

There is another incident related with this work. The committee was advised by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji that the collection of any money by demanding it should not be undertaken. The Holy work of Guru Sahib would be taken care of Guru Sahib and people should just have faith in the Lord. When the shuttering of the roof was complete, there was shortage of money to make the complete payment for purchasing steel and cement. The trader refused to accept half payment and demanded full payment in advance. The sangat had no alternative left and reached the Kutia to seek the grace of Sant Baba ji. Sant Baba ji laughed on hearing the pleading of the sangat. He said, “Money is the slave of pious individuals.” He then advised, “Steel be bought from Jagdamba Steel.” He also mentioned the name of the cement trader.

The steel trader gave the steel without any advance. When the steel reached the village, the money for paying it also got collected through donations by the villagers. The complete building was ready in October 1996. At present, there are two floors of 55 feet by 50 feet including a hall 50 feet by 42 feet and the rest being a verandah al around. The height of the minaret is 72 feet. A separate langar hall has also been constructed later on. There is no dearth of money in the Gurdwara.

The Gurdwara is regularly visited by staff and families of the Air Force stationed in the nearby Adampur aerodrome in addition to the local villagers. Diwan is organized both in the morning as well in the evening. Sehaj Path is a regular feature. Arrangement for regular and comfortable stay of Granthi Singhs has also been made.

During the congregation announcement is made about the discipline to be followed by those coming on the stage. The committee ensures that there is no digress from the instructions of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji. The sangat followed the guidance of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and is now enjoying the fruits of his blessings.

Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Ludhiana

The city of Ludhian is in a well known district of Punjab. Many devotees of the Kutia live in the city and within the towns and villages of the district. Workers, traders, manufacturers from this area take out time to visit the Kutia. The devotees were not well off but their love and respect for Sant Baba ji was immense. It was the blessing of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji that they thought of listening to Gurbani Keertan daily. The devotees discussed amongst themselves for construction of a separate Gurdwara to fulfill their desire. They collected and came to Nirmal Kutia Johalan and requested Sant Baba ji, “Maharaj ji! Please bless us and guide us so that we are able to construct a Gurdwara Sahib in our area in Ludhiana. We want to daily attend the congregation at Gurdwara Sahib and improve our as well as our children’s future.”

Sant Baba ji was very happy and visited Ludhiana. He took the sangat to a specific place and pointed out that the Gurdwara should be built there. Sant Baba ji suggested that the owner of the land be asked for his consent and the price for payment be negotiated.

The owner of the land was ready to part with two kanals of his land for the religious purpose. The foundation stone of the Gurdwara was kept on 24th April 2000 by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and Sant Baba Harbhajan Singh ‘Virakat’ ji.

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji named the Gurdwara as ‘Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, New Shastri Nagar, Ludhiana’.

The Holy Hymns of Asa di Var are sung everyday at the Gurdwara. A diwan is arranged on every Sunday evening. Bhog of Sehaj Path is undertaken on every No Moon Day.

All Gurpurabs are celebrated with fanfare. The anniversary of the earlier Holy Saints of the Kutia and the foundation day of the Gurdwara is celebrated with the instructions of Chief of the Kutia. Sant Baba Jit Singh ji with other devotees attend this celebration.

The humble devotees remember the blessings of the Holy Saint

Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Bradford (U K)

The families and relatives of many devotees of Nirmal Kutia Johalan are living in foreign countries. They come to visit the Kutia whenever they come to their village. It was observed that though these persons were well off but were far away from Sikhism. They had fallen from their religious morals. Hardly anyone could be seen with hair and turban. They however were eager and requested Sant Baba Gian Singh ji to visit their country and guide them to follow the right path.

On the request of the devotees, Sant Baba Gian Singh ji visited England for the first time in the year 1980. He toured various cities for three months spreading Sikhism. 730 individuals were baptized during this tour with the nectar prepared by five beloveds from the two edged sword. In Bradford alone 200 persons were baptized. Sant Baba ji distributed a thousand turbans to individuals and inspired them to remain within the fold of Dasam Patshah’s discipline. The preaching’s by Sant Baba ji were admired by many and because of this vast acceptance by residents of England, he gave instructions to establish an Institution in the name of ‘Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan’ and to formulate its constitution.

In presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Bradford the baptized devotees collected and prepared the basis of the constitution and their fundamental objectives. This was approved by the sangat. The sangat also vowed that they would always respect and keep the discipline of Nirmal Johalan as supreme, follow the instructions of the Mahapurakhs of the Kutia and would remain ready to serve the Guru Panth and Sri Guru Granth Sahib with their guidance. The sangat prayed to the Almighty for helping them establish a Gurdwara in the town.

The joy the sangat felt on the establishing of a Gurdwara, led it to collect 14000 pounds. The sangat was unaware at that time that this was a sort of miracle of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji. In 1982 after one year the historical building of Bradford Gurdwara was obtained from the City Council by paying the exact amount of 14000 pounds. The price of the building was though in lakhs at that time.

The Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan organization received a building that had been declared as a prestigious ‘Listed Building’ by the Bradford City Center. It was inaugurated as a Gurdwara by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji on 24th October 1982. After the bhog of five Akhand Paths and prayers by all present there the saffron Nishan Sahib was hoisted by the five beloveds. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji named this Gurdwara as Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Bradford (UK).

With the establishment of this Gurdwara in 1982, the discipline of Nirmal Kutia Johalan was clearly visible and the devotees thronged the Gurdwara to attend all functions held there with all love, faith, and enthusiasm. It became a special religious place where service and meditation was undertaken by specially by those who had been blessed and baptized with the guidance of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji.

Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan Birmingham (UK)

Sardar Gurmit Singh of Birmingham received baptism of the nectar of two edged sword with the blessing of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji of Nirmal Kutia Johalan in the year 1987. He once shared his feelings with other devotees of the Kutia. He said, “Hundreds of people within the midland area have been baptized but these Sikhs have to face different discipline in the different Gurdwaras they go to pay their homage. Less of religion and more politics were observed in most of the Gurdwaras. This hampered and brought many difficulties to the follower of the Tenth Master who had been guided by Sant Mahapurashs of the Kutia. The devotees around Bradford were lucky to have a Gurdwara in their amidst and could easily follow the discipline of Gurbani and dress as prescribed by the Tenth Master. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji should bless the devotees of midland area also and instruct us to establish a Gurdwara Sahib in this area.”

There was certainly a pain expressed in the words of S Gurmit Singh. The devotees of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji collected in a meeting on 22nd April 1987 and it was resolved to begin sincere efforts for establishing another Gurdwara with the blessings of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and with the patronage of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. Another meeting was scheduled for 17th May 1987.

The resolution passed was carried by a devotee to Sant Baba Gian Singh ji at Nirmal Kutia Johalan to seek his permission for the good cause. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji listened to the wordings of the resolution and said, “It is the love of the sangat to think in this manner. They should seek the patronage of the Almighty and start the work.”

On Sunday the 17th May 1987 at 4 pm the sangat met in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji at Birmingham and unanimously passed resolutions to the effect that a Gurdwara on the lines of Bradford Gurdwara be established in Birmingham area also with the guidance and blessings of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji. The complete service of the Gurdwara would be undertaken by the devotees as per the instructions of the Holy Saint. Nineteen Gursikhs from all over England were named to purchase the building and look after the same as per the instructions of Sant Baba ji.

The responsible devotees soon found a building with three halls, 15 to 20 rooms and space for parking 500 cars was located and the same was purchased for the Gurdwara Sahib. The inauguration was done by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji on 3rd October 1987, after the Bhog of five Akhand Paths and with the help of the five beloveds who hoisted the Nishan Sahib. This Gurdwara was named by the Holy Saint as ‘Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, Birmingham (UK). The discipline of Bradford Gurdwara was to be followed in this Gurdwara also and the instructions of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji were announced to all in this regard.

Gurdwara Amrit Parchar Dharmik Diwan, High Wickham (UK)

Sriman Sant Baba Gian Singh ji during one of his tours to England visited the city of Wolverhampton. The devotees of High Wickham came to pay their homage to the Holy Saint. They requested Sant Baba ji, “Maharaj ji! There is no Gurdwara in our city. Please bless us and establish a Gurdwara in our city as well.”

Sant Baba ji advised, “First, all of you accept the nectar of the two edged sword blessed by Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji and only then we will think about your request.” These words influenced the devotees who almost immediately obtained baptism. Their attire changed. They observed that the majesty of a Sikh was in wearing a turban. They also found a suitable building and decided to request Sant Baba ji to bless them with a Gurdwara Sahib. Sant Baba ji was kind and compassionate. On 4th September 1993 an Akhand Path was started. The Bhog of this Akhand Path was undertaken on 6th September 1993 in the presence of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and a collection of devotees of England.

With the guidance of Sant Baba ji the Nishan Sahib was hoisted ceremoniously. Religious hymns were sung and discourses were undertaken thanking the Holy Saint for his generosity. The eyes of the sangat were in tears and they considered this whole happening as a dream. The sangat said that they were fortunate to have a religious guide in the form of Sant Baba Gian Singh ji who was instrumental in providing them a sacred place for recitation of Gurbani, listening to the holy hymns and meditation on the Lord.

Sant Baba ji said on this occasion, “This sacred place has been established only due to the prayers of the sangat.” He recited the following hymn:

He then said, “This sacred service has been granted to the sangat for their life as a blessing of the Almighty.” The devotees collect for congregations and are enjoying the happiness of the Almighty.
