Nirmal Kutiya Johalan

THE SOWING OF GROUND NUTS

Dr. Atma Singh was a devotee of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj since long. With the blessings of Sant Baba ji he settled in village Johal. He examined the state of healthiness of Sant Baba ji from time to time. His son is also in the medical profession and both father and son come regularly to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan for treatment of any ailment of the present Holy saint or any other sadhu in the Kutiya.

Dr. Atma Singh’s parental village is Lallian. He has some agricultural land in that village and takes out two harvests in a year.

Once during the times of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj, a relative of Doctor Sahib came to meet him in Johal. The relative informed him, “This is the right time to sow ground nuts. The land has been prepared for the sowing.”

Dr. Sahib said, “Thank you for the information. Please arrange for a tractor and four labourers. I will reach there tomorrow for the sowing.”

The relative came back to Lallian and arranged for a tractor on hire and also for the four labourers to reach the fields the next day. Next morning Dr. Sahib reached the village. The sowing of groundnuts was started in his presence. After some time Doctor Sahib enquired from the friend of the owner of the tractor who was also present there, “Does the tractor owner drink alcohol?”

“Yes! He drinks,” came the reply.

Doctor Sahib came to the village and asked a shopkeeper about the alcohol. When the shopkeeper replied in the affirmative, Doctor Sahib said to him, “Please place two bottles in this bag and keep it in the basket of my cycle.”

The shopkeeper did as he was told and Doctor Sahib after paying him came back to his fields. He said to the tractor owner, “Take this. This is for you. You may do as you wish in the evening.”

On the completion of the sowing of the groundnuts, Doctor Sahib came back to the village Johal. Next morning Doctor Sahib visited the Kutiya of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. Sant Baba ji was sitting under the shadow of the trees. When Doctor Sahib bowed his head on the ground in front of Sant Baba ji in reverence, Sant Baba ji said to him, “Doctor ji! First go to Sri Guru Granth Sahib and seek forgiveness from the Lord. Ask Giani Didar Singh to pray for your forgiveness.”

Doctor Sahib was confused. However he came towards the Darbar Hall with Giani Didar Singh ji. He did not understand about the forgiveness and thought about it. While Giani ji was getting ready for the prayers, Sant Baba ji called Doctor Sahib to him. Doctor Sahib paid his homage again. Sant Baba ji said to him, “Doctor Sahib! How could you feel that your groundnut sowing would not have taken place?”

These words of Sant Baba ji brought to surface the mistake of Doctor Sahib for his having arranged for two bottles of alcohol for the tractor owner. Doctor Sahib was then sent again to the Darbar Hall for the necessary prayers seeking forgiveness from the Almighty.

Doctor Sahib came back a relieved man after the prayers. Sant Baba ji said to him, “The money of Gursikhs is in fact the money of the Almighty. It is therefore a sin to utilize the money for such unethical purposes.”

Doctor Sahib promised not to indulge in such things in future. His grave mistake was excused.

Sant Baba ji had a typical way of teaching his followers and made them understand the truthful path to be followed. He used to treat his beloved followers like small kids. He taught them the principles of Sikhism and stopped them from committing any type of sin. All their works were accomplished and wishes fulfilled when such individuals followed the path prescribed by Guru Sahib.

She may wear good clothes, but the bride is ugly and rude; her mind is false and
impure. She does not walk in harmony with the Will of her Husband Lord. Instead,
she foolishly gives Him orders. But she who walks in harmony with the Guru’s Will,
shall be spared all pain and suffering. (Page 89)
