TEACHING RESPECT FOR ELDERS

Whenever young men came alone to visit Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj, he used to feel very happy. He was very open while discussing things with the young persons. He often asked the youngster the following questions:

“Which village do you belong to or from where have you come from?”

“What is the name of your father?”

“What is the name of your grandfather?”

“What is the name of your great grandfather?”

Many youngsters could not reply the questions and Sant Baba ji clarified, “So and so is your grandfather/great grandfather.”

The young man was then asked to remember the name of the grandfather/ great grandfather.

Sant Baba ji asked the youngster, “Do you touch the feet of your father/grandfather everyday?”

The young man would fidget at this question, as most of them did not touch the feet of the elders.

Sant Baba ji then asked, “Your grandfather is a Sikh of a high order. He is elder to you in age as well as experience. You should touch his feet. You will get his blessings. Is there any harm in receiving good wishes from the elders?”

The young man would say, “Yes, Maharaj! There is no harm.”

This teaching to the young men was considered very important by Sant Baba ji. Sant Baba ji guided these individuals to respect elders. In the old age, which was approaching fast, these youngsters should be able to imbibe the same teaching in their children. Short questions and answers were important as they acted as counseling for the young men.
