Nirmal Kutiya Johalan

TEACHING ASCETISM TO SANGAT

One day Sardar Gurcharan Singh Dhillon, Superintendent of Police, posted in Jalandhar, came to the Jalandhar Cantt residence of Giani Lakshmi Narain Singh, (Retd. SSP). After the pleasantries, Dhillon Sahib said, “Since morning I have been longing to have DARSHAN of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. I did not feel like going alone to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan, and request you to join me.”

Giani ji replied, “What better thing can there be than the DARSHAN of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. The Almighty has given you the thought and you have taken the effort of coming here, and now I am fortunate to accompany you and get the benefit of the DARSHAN.”

Both started in Dhillon Sahib’s car and proceeded towards Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. On the way Dhillon Sahib said, “It is 10.30 a.m and we will reach the Kutiya by 11.00 a.m. I have a meeting lined up at 3.00 p.m, in my office. I am sure we will be back by then.”

Giani ji advised Dhillon Sahib, “Dhillon Sahib! When you are going to the abode of a Holy saint, then you should forget about the time. Great saints know everything and can observe our past, present and future. Whatever they do would be for our good. So, don’t worry about the time.”

Dhillon Sahib said, “The official meeting is a crucial one. In case Sant Baba ji does not permit us to leave, you should request on my behalf and take leave by expressing my delicate circumstances.”

Giani ji said, “OK! Let’s see what happens.”

Sant Baba ji was sitting under the mango tree at his abode. After bowing at the feet of Sant Baba ji both the officers stood in reverence. Sant Baba ji said to Sant Baba Gian Singh ji, “Santa! Fetch two mats for Sarkar to sit on.” (Sant Baba ji addressed Giani ji and Dhillon Sahib as ‘SARKAR’, a term meaning ‘Government’ but commonly used for people when wishing to express honor for them.)

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji placed two mats nearby. Sant Baba ji said, “Sarkar! Please sit down.”

After some time Sant Baba ji asked, “Is the public happy?”

Dhillon Sahib was unable to comprehend the question and looked at Giani ji who clarified, “Maharaj ji is asking if the public of the town is happy with the working of the Police Department?”

Dhillon Sahib replied, “Yes, Maharaj! It is all due to your blessings. The Police Force is performing its job perfectly well, with your grace.”

Sant Baba ji kept quiet and after some time said, “Santa! It is always good to serve the SARKAR. Please serve some tea, milk and snacks.”

Obeying the orders Sant Baba Gian Singh ji informed ‘Virakat’ ji about the instructions. The attendants were given the things to serve. Milk was served to both the officers. The milk was an unusual one. It contained almonds, dried grapes and dried dates. They relished the milk and then both came back near Sant Baba ji.

They had just sat in the lotus position on their respective mats, when they saw Sant Baba ji closing his eyes. Both of them looked at the divine face of Sant Baba ji. Giani ji also closed his eyes. There was no sound except the pleasing flow of the wind. There was nothing disturbing the SAMADHI of Sant Baba ji.

Dhillon Sahib could not sit for long in the lotus position. He fidgeted from one position to the other. His movement however, did not disturb anyone. After about two hours of silence all around, Dhillon Sahib whispered to Giani ji, “Please take leave from Maharaj ji.”

Giani ji signaled that Maharaj ji was in SAMADHI and how could he disturb him.

A further half an hour passed after which Sant Baba ji cleared his throat with a small cough. An alert Dhillon Sahib struck his knee on the knee of Giani ji and whispered, “Now is the time. Please take leave.”

Giani ji looked at Dhillon Sahib and then at Sant Baba ji. Sant Baba ji had opened his eyes. Giani ji requested, “Maharaj ji! Dhillon Sahib requests for leave. He has an important meeting to attend.”

Sant Baba ji had gone back into his SAMADHI. There was no reply from his side. Giani ji looked at Dhillon Sahib and expressed his inability to do anything else.

Giani ji was in a trance and enjoying every moment in the Kutiya. He was thinking, “It was the first time that dry fruits were served in the milk. Sant Baba ji had prepared us to meditate on the Lord, sitting in the Kutiya. With a full stomach, there should not be any problem to enjoy the Name of the Lord. Sant Baba ji had blessed them and they should enjoy his grace with all humility.”

Dhillon Sahib also was quiet now and was not feeling disturbed; infact he was now not thinking about the meeting at all. He also was observing Sant Baba ji with keenness.

Sant Baba ji was in a complete divine state, as was visible on his face.

In my consciousness, I remember You in meditation; with my eyes, I behold You;
I fill my ears with the Word of Your Bani, and Your Sublime Praise.
My mind is the bumble bee; I enshrine Your feet within my heart,
and with my tongue, I chant the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. ||1||
My love for the Lord of the Universe does not decrease.
I paid for it dearly, in exchange for my soul. ||1||Pause|| (Page 694)

The time of the meeting, which Dhillon Sahib was to attend, had long passed. It was now 5.00 p.m in the evening.

Sant Baba ji once again cleared his throat. Dhillon Sahib said to Giani ji, “If Maharaj ji does not permit us to leave now, please request him yourself.”

But Sant Baba ji did not come out of his SAMADHI. Dhillon Sahib thought as to what type of Sadhu Sant Baba ji was? He sits on the floor on an ordinary mat made from bagasse. Sitting on the floor, he can enter into SAMADHI so easily. He was unfazed and unconcerned about himself. He did not have anything to do with what was happening in the world.

Giani ji on the other hand was thinking, “How fortunate we are to be sitting in front of such a great saint and enjoying the divine glow? A sadhu teaches us to worship the Lord. We are sitting here and learning to meditate and follow the ways of Sant Baba ji. Sant Baba ji did not have anything to eat before or during the SAMADHI, whereas they had been served with special milk.”

Sant Baba ji opened his eyes around 7.00 p.m. He picked up his stick lying on the floor nearby. He started striking the stick on the ground. After some time Sant Baba ji said, “Santa! Bring Parshad and let us take leave from the sangat.”

When Sant Baba Gian Singh ji was giving the Parshad, Sant Baba ji said, “Sarkar! You must be having other important duties to perform. I take leave of you.”

Dhillon Sahib immediately got up. He and Giani ji touched the feet of Sant Baba ji and came out of the Kutiya.

Once in the car, Dhillon Sahib said, “I am very tired today.”

Giani ji replied, “It was really a fortunate day. I don’t know what all troubles of ours have been taken care of by Sant Baba ji. Let us thank him. A lot of will power is required to remain in SAMADHI for such a long time. What we have seen today is just a fraction of his meditation. Sant Baba ji remains in SAMADHI for days together. Whenever we feel hungry our stomach starts calling for food. But hunger or thirst has nothing to do with Sant Baba ji. Let us pray to Sant Baba ji to bless us also with a small share of his grace.”
