SERVICE OF SARDAR HUKAM SINGH

Selfless service creates modesty in the heart. One becomes meek and the ego vanishes. The service of the Holy saint or his devotees is then performed with humbleness. This kind of service gets repaid through the shower of wealth, miraculous spiritual powers and the nine treasures on the Gursikh.

Such a selfless service has to be learnt first. A benevolent Holy saint can teach it. The Holy saint blesses two things:

1. The knowledge of the method of doing a particular service.
2. His blessings on the Gursikh.

Sardar Hukam Singh belonged to village Bolina. He was the brother of Sardar Karam Singh Kirti (MLA). Sardar Hukam Singh was a landlord and his agricultural fields were in the BAR area in SINDH province. He sold his land in SINDH and purchased agricultural land in Punjab. He however remained attached to his roots in SINDH.

Sardar Hukam Singh was a devotee of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. He remained in the attendance of Sant Baba ji, at the Kutiya and also when he went outside.

Once Sardar Hukam Singh went to SINDH and brought a royal saddle, reins, the cover of the saddle, stirrups and a beautiful rug for the horse (KISHNU) on which Sant Baba ji did his riding. He donated the costly gifts for the horse to the Kutiya.

In those days another devotee of Sant Baba ji had brought a horse to the Kutiya from SINDH. This horse had won three horse races in SINDH. He was happy to have purchased such a horse, but on seeing it closely, he felt that he was not meant for such a goodbred horse. He therefore presented this horse to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. (This was the same horse riding which Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj had beaten another Sadhu in horse racing)

This fortunate horse was provided all the goodies brought by Sardar Hukam Singh.

Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj rode Kishnu and Sant Baba Gian Singh ji walked beside with the other horse fully dressed up. Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj sometimes asked Sant Baba Gian Singh ji to ride the horse. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji obeyed the instructions of Sant Baba ji but always kept the horse behind the horse of Sant Baba ji. Both the Sadhus sometimes rode the horses for quite a long time and took the horses far away from the Kutiya.

Agriculturists working in the fields on seeing Sant Baba ji passing nearby became very happy. Some one brought cane juice, someone brought buttermilk, milk and other products to serve Sant Baba ji. Request was made to Sant Baba ji to accept these. These products were served with all humility.

Sometimes Sant Baba ji did not stop and continued slowly on his journey. The devotees followed the horses. Wherever Sant Baba ji stopped his horse they came forward and presented the products. Sant Baba ji recognizing his devotees asked, “What is the order of the sangat of Bhojowal (In case the sangat belonged to village Bhojowal)?”

Every devotee was called by his name. Sant Maharaj ji remembered the name of the village the devotee belonged to. The devotees were overjoyed to be called by their name and they involved themselves in the service of Sant Baba ji.

Two fillies were born to the new horse. When they grew up, Sant Baba ji kept Sant Baba Harbhajan Singh ‘Virakat’ ji also with him during his riding sessions. Many a times Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and ‘Virakat’ ji were sent for riding in order to exercise the horses. Virakat ji felt shy in sitting on the horse. Obeying the orders of Gurudev he sat on the horse but immediately climbed down.

The horses remained in the stable for quite a long period.

One of the devotees was fortunate to gift a horse to the Kutiya and another devotee was privileged for bringing the goodies for riding it.

Sardar Hukam Singh was always happy when he found the horse saddled with the things he had brought from SINDH. He thanked Sant Baba ji to have accepted his SEWA.
