SERVICE BY THE LADIES

Meditating on the Lord creates an unsullied mind. In addition to meditation, service to the people also makes the heart pure. The Lord accepts all kinds of service if it is selfless. Such a service is invaluable.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ||

Serving the Perfect Guru, one becomes carefree, enshrining the Lord within the mind.
The mind and body become immaculately pure, and a lasting peace fills the heart;
doubt is eradicated from within. ||3||(Page 600)

One day a congregation was going on at the abode of Sant Baba Harnam Singh ji Maharaj. The sangat was listening to the Kirtan (singing of Holy hymns) being performed. There were some ladies who were involved in the service of preparing the holy food.

At the end of the congregation, the ladies working in the langar collectively came to Sant Baba ji. There was a doubt in their minds, which they wanted Sant Maharaj ji to clarify. They requested Sant Baba ji, “Maharaj ji! We are denied the good fortune of listening to the singing of the holy hymns. When the singing is going on, we are involved in the preparation of the holy food. How then will we benefit and attain salvation?”

Sant Baba ji was moved by the feelings of the ladies. He very well realized the doubts in their minds. He clarified to them, “Please understand that such is the power of reciting the Lord’s Name that even a bird just by flying across this abode becomes eligible for salvation. You are not only present here but are physically involved in the service of the Guru. You are working hard and devotedly preparing the holy food, the Guru ka Langar. Everyone including those who are singing the hymns will share this langar. Your service is therefore more important to the Guru. You should not worry about the welfare of your souls. You are by your actions entitled fully to the blessings of the Lord.”

Service to the Guru is worship of the Guru. How rare are those who obtain it!

It may be mentioned here for clarification that there were no loud speakers during those days and it was not possible for those sitting at a little distance to listen to the voice of the singers performing the kirtan.

The ladies on hearing the words of Sant Baba ji felt that they had been graced. The doubts in their minds had been fully settled. They continued to perform their selfless service, reciting the Name of the Lord while preparing the Guru ka langar.
