PROTECTOR OF THE DEVOTEE

Bhai Narain Singh of village Hallowal was a devotee of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. With the blessings of Sant Baba ji he managed to purchase a cow. He thought that he should prepare curd from the milk of the cow and massage it on the holy body of Sant Baba ji at the time of taking bath.

The thoughts and wishes of the followers of Sant Baba ji are clean and full of love. There is no selfishness nor is there any trickery involved in the service they want to provide. Bhai Narain Singh had been able to buy a cow with the blessings of Sant Baba ji and he thought that giving bath to Sant Baba ji with the curd was the correct way to thank him. In this manner the curd from the milk would touch the body of Sant Baba ji.

The cow was indeed fortunate and so was Sardar Narain Singh who thought of performing such a service.

Curd was prepared and at 12.00 0’clock at night, he started from his village to the dwelling of Sant Baba ji near Bhatolian. He prayed to Sant Baba ji before starting, “Maharaj ji! The cow is your blessing on me. I have prepared curd from its milk. Please bless me by accepting this trifle offer of mine. My desire will be fulfilled if you accept the same. Also please remain with me during the night all along the way.”

During those days there was wilderness all around. Because of the darkness and the uninhabited area, Bhai ji became frightened after walking only a short distance. The path was unmettalled and there was poor visibility. He feared that he might not go astray and start walking towards the dense jungle. He took every step with caution.

The spiritual wires got connected. Sant Baba ji presented himself in an imperceptible form to look after his beloved devotee. Sant Baba ji sometimes walked in front of Bhai Narain Singh and sometimes behind him. Bhai Narain Singh could not see anything but could hear the footsteps. The sound of the footsteps assured him that he was on the right track. He sometimes felt that someone was walking in front of him and sometimes behind him. He became confident that he was not alone. There were other people walking the path along with him.

Once when he reached the dwelling place of Sant Baba ji the sound of the footsteps stopped.

Bhai Narain Singh reached the abode at 4.00 o’clock in the morning. He saw Sant Baba ji sitting on his ASAN. He bowed his head on the ground in respect. Sant Baba ji was cleaning the dust on his legs and feet with a cloth. Bhai Narain Singh genuflected on the feet and humbly enquired, “Maharaj ji! Today you have gone for a very early morning walk?”

Sant Baba ji said, “Narain Singh! I was performing my duty.”

Bhai Sahib asked, “What type of duty Maharaj ji and that too in the darkness?”

Bhai ji took the cloth from the hands of Sant Baba ji and started cleaning the feet.

Sant Baba ji said, “Bhai! It was a duty for me. You were afraid of the darkness. You don’t recite Gurbani and therefore you had to be afraid during your walk in the night. I thought of remaining beside you. You did not rest nor allowed me to rest during the night.”

Bhai Narain Singh became emotional and fell on the feet of Sant Baba ji. His heart cried aloud and he could not resist his tears from flowing. His tears fell on the feet of Sant Baba ji.

He thanked Sant Baba ji again and again. He said, “Patshah! I am not worthy of so much of your kindness. I was frightened. I did hear the footsteps but could not see anything. My fear vanished just by hearing the footsteps. I am really fortunate that during the entire distance you protected me.”

Sant Baba ji did not want to listen anything further in his praise and said, “The ambrosial morning hour is passing quickly. Let me now take my bath.”

Bhai Narain Singh was privileged to touch the body of Sant Baba ji while rubbing the curd on it. He gave bath to him with love and respect. Sant Baba ji kept on reciting Gurbani during the time he attended on him for the bath.

Bhai Sahib thought, “I am so fortunate that I have been able to touch the body of this divine person. I could not do anything if he did not permit me to rub the curd on his body. But I have now understood that wherever one is one should keep on reciting Gurbani. The Gurbani helps in washing away one’s sins and helps in removing the fears of the mind.”

It is mentioned in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib:

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵੈ ||
ਸਾਧਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ || (ਪੰਨਾ ੬੨੩)

He sings the Ambrosial Word of the Guru’s Bani,
and bathes in the dust of the feet of the Holy.(Page 623)
