Nirmal Kutiya Johalan

MYSTERIOUS IS THE SERMON OF A SADHU

Great saints, sadhus, Mahatmas and Mahapurkhs are able to identify the spiritual level of other Holy figures without examining them. The divinity of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj was not only recognized by ordinary persons but was appreciated by many sadhus and saints of the other sects. Sant Baba ji led a life that was pure as a diamond. Sweet talk and the glow on the face of His Holiness attracted many such saints to meet him personally.

When the saints of various sects came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan to meet Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj, they were accorded all respect. Sant Baba ji was a saint with few words and thus his interaction with the other saints was also very limited. It was however not known that the conversation between two great saints was being carried out through the inner channels. The platform on which they must be meeting would normally not be known to ordinary individuals.

Sant Baba ji gave full respect to all saints who visited the Kutiya. The saint was made to sit on a white sheet even though Sant Baba ji himself sat on an ordinary mat made from bagasse. The saint was served good food while an attendant fanned him. Before the saint left he was presented a shawl, a turban, a blanket or any other thing. The respect remained the same even if the saint visited the Kutiya any number of times.

Sant Pal Singh was a Chakravarty saint. He gave a lot of respect to Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. The peaceful atmosphere of the Kutiya attracted him and he came again and again. He recognized the reason for the bent of Sant Baba ji in strictly following the Sikh doctrines and spreading the same amongst the public. This had brought the mysterious glow on the face of Sant Baba ji. He also knew that Sant Baba ji had the complete blessings of Guru Maharaj ji.

Sant Pal Singh was growing older but he did not stop from coming to the Kutiya. Once, Sant Pal Singh came to the Kutiya for the DARSHAN of Sant Baba ji. Sant Baba ji enquired about his welfare and then went into deep meditation. Sant Pal Singh also went into his Samadhi. He kept on looking at Sant Baba ji. He saw a special glow on the face of Sant Baba ji in penance.

After some time Sant Baba ji came out of his penance and said to Sant Pal Singh, “Let me take leave of you now.”

It seemed that he had taken this decision after a long discussion. Sant Pal Singh ji said, “Satya Vachan ji! I have however to make a request.”

Sant Baba ji immediately said, “What is that you order?”

Sant Pal Singh said, “With the blessings of the Almighty I have a lot of money with me. I want to donate it to the Kutiya. Please let me do so.”

Sant Baba ji explained, “Kutiya does not require any money. The sadhus of the Kutiya go out for seeking food as alms. They bring food for us and also for themselves.”

Sant Pal Singh requested, “Please construct a room for your living and live a comfortable life.”

Sant Baba ji said, “We are very comfortable. Our body is not meant for comforts.”

Sant Baba ji had observed Sant Pal Singh and knew that he had no desire in return for donating the money. After keeping quiet for some time he said, “Why don’t you ask Giani Didar Singh for the proper utilization of your money?”

Giani Didar Singh was the Nambardar of village Johal and was present there at that time. Giani ji heard the instructions but kept quiet.

Sant Pal Singh addressed Nambardar ji and said, “Please utilize the money for a good purpose.”

Giani Didar Singh was observing the grace of Sant Baba ji. With all humbleness he said, “A building of a Gurdwara in the village Johal be constructed for the use of the villagers.”

Sant Baba ji said, “This is real good.” He then said to Sant Pal Singh, “Sant ji! Your problem has been solved very quickly.”

Sant Pal Singh thanked Sant Baba ji for his kindness.

The fruits of one’s desires are obtained.

Sant Baba ji advised, “Nambardar ji! You should take the consent of the other village elders. The space has to be decided and provided by the elders of the village. It is always good to take a collective decision.”

Nambardar ji said, “Maharaj ji! I have understood and will abide by your orders. I will take the consent of the people after talking to them.”

Nambardar ji did not have any difficulty in taking the consent of the villagers for the building and neither did he have any difficulty in deciding on a site for the same.

The foundation stone of the Gurdwara was laid by Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. The building of the Gurdwara was erected under the supervision of Sant Pal Singh. This Gurdwara is known as ‘Gurdwara of Sant Pal Singh’. The residents of the village use the Gurdwara for their occasions of grief as well as for happiness.

Two special events are celebrated every year at the Gurdwara. One is on the occasion of MAGHI and the other is the day celebrated in the memory of Sant Pal Singh ji. On both the occasions AKHAND PATH SAHIB is arranged. The priests for the AKHAND PATHS are arranged with the instructions of the present chief of Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. On the day of the Bhog of Sri AKHAND PATH, the present chief also attends the religious celebrations.

In this manner was the money of Sant Pal Singh utilized for a good cause, and the villagers always remember him for his benevolence.

No one had ever seen Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj touching money. When an unknown person placed a currency note in front of Sant Baba ji he immediately said, “Pick up this piece of paper. It is of no use to us.”

He used to call money as Nagini. He said, “Why have you kept this Nagini here. Please immediately pick it up.”

The following verse in Sri Guru Granth Sahib is appropriate here:

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ||
ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਦੀ ਖਸਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਨ ਅਗੈ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕਾਰ || (ਪੰਨਾ ੯੦)

O Nanak, those who worship and adore the Lord’s Name
night and day, vibrate the String of the Lord’s Love.
Maya, the maid-servant of our Lord and Master, serves them. (Page 90)
