HOW CAN FROST AFFECT A HOLY MAN ?

During the night Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj preferred to stay under the open sky to perform his worship. Cactus plantation surrounded the thatched hut. One night sitting near the cactus, with the True Lord enshrined in his heart, he was soon united with the Eternal.

It was one of those chilly winter nights. The Holy saint, without any clothes on his body, remained under the open sky, enjoying the wealth and warmth of God’s Name. His mind and soul were attuned with the Eternal and thus there was no feeling of any cold.

In the wee hours of the morning, Sardar Mehar Singh, a farmer from the village Johal, came with his bullocks to plough his agricultural fields. His fields were adjoining the abode of Sant Baba ji. Sardar Mehar Singh accidentally saw the meditating Sant Baba ji. With the eyes closed in prayers, Sant Baba ji’s head and shoulders were covered with frost. Sardar ji’s heart cried out aloud on seeing the sight. He bowed before Sant Baba ji, tied the bullocks to a peg and ran towards his home in the village.

He informed his wife what he had just witnessed. He said to his wife, “Maharaj ji’s body is covered with frost. Give me an unused Khes (an unused cotton shawl) to cover his body.”

The wife of Sardar Mehar Singh who was also a devotee of Sant Baba ji immediately took out a new shawl from the trunk and gave it to her husband. When Sardar Mehar Singh came out of his house, Sardar Daler Singh, of the same village, joined him. Sardar Daler Singh was also told about the scene who immediately understood that Sant Baba ji was blessed with a treasure of devotional worship.

Both of them came to where Sant Baba ji was sitting. They bowed and then stood in front of Sant Baba ji with folded hands. They did not want to disturb Sant Baba ji.Sant Baba ji opened his eyes, saw the two of them and asked, “How are you here so early in the morning?”

Both fell on the feet of Sant Baba ji. Their hearts were lighted with the glow of the spiritual sight they had just seen. Sardar Mehar Singh spoke in a low voice, “Maharaj! Your body is covered with frost. Please permit us to clean it and allow us to cover you with this shawl.”

Sant Baba ji understood the love the two had for him and said, “Gurmukho! Do as you wish.”

Both of them first removed the frost from the body and dried it. The naked body was then covered with the shawl. The body had though turned blue because of the cold, yet there was no shiver in the body. Sant Baba ji was in his normal state and there was no change in his sitting posture.

Both these friends were fortunate to have touched the body of this great saint. Their families narrate this incident with gusto. They remain blessed and keep on coming to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan, to pay their homage.
