Nirmal Kutiya Johalan

GURDWARA HANDI WALI SANGAT

Giani Didar Singh, Nambardar of village Johal sang the Holy Hymns at Nirmal Kutiya Johalan with the order of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. He was a researcher of the history of the Sikhs. He loved to narrate strange incidents to the sangat whenever he found time during the Kirtan or during his work as the stage secretary in the congregations.

Once, Giani ji was researching the history on ‘Handi Wali Sangat’ at his residence. He was able to trace the entire episode. He came to know that an old lady prepared KHICHRI (Dish of rice, pulses and vegetables) in an earthen pot and served it to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib. The entire sangat with the tenth Master was also served this dish. But Giani ji was unable to trace the name of the old lady despite going through many historical books.

As per his daily routine he came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan in the evening. He paid his respects to Sant Baba ji who was sitting on a small mat. Giani Didar Singh paid his respects to Sant ji Maharaj and sat close to him. He had taken his seat when a Sardar ji came in an Ambassador car. He came to Sant Baba ji and bowed his head before him.

Sant Baba ji asked the man to sit and said, “Gurmukho! From where have you come?”

Sardar ji replied, “Maharaj ji! I have come from Patna Sahib. I am posted there as a Deputy Commissioner. I wanted to have your DARSHAN and so have come to touch your Holy feet.”

Sant Baba ji directed Sardar ji, “Please go and pay your homage to Sri Guru Granth Sahib in the Darbar Hall.”

Sardar ji replied, “Satya Vachan Maharaj!”

When the gentleman came back Sant Baba ji said to him, “Near Patna Sahib, there is a Gurdwara known as ‘Gurdwara HANDI Wali Sangat’.”

Sardar ji informed Sant Baba ji, “Yes, Maharaj! That Gurdwara is a historical Gurdwara of MAI JAVI.”

Sant ji Maharaj addressed Giani Didar Singh, “Nambardar ji! You are also a researcher of Sikh history. Note down the name of the old lady. You will need it in your discourses.”

Giani Didar Singh was overwhelmed with emotions. He could not imagine that his thought at his residence would get answered so soon. He fell at the feet of Sant Baba ji. He said, “I have been researching about the history of this Gurdwara at my home today. I was unable to find the name of the old lady who had served the sangat. I had thought I would enquire the name from your good self. You have called this Deputy Commissioner from Patna Sahib especially for me to complete my research. I am truly blessed Maharaj ji.”

Nambardar ji remembered the following verse from Sri Guru Granth Sahib at that time:

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਰੇ || (ਪੰਨਾ ੧੩)

O Inner-knower, Searcher of Hearts, O Primal Being,
Architect of Destiny: please fulfill this yearning of my mind. (Page 13)

This story amply conveys that Nirmal Kutiya Johalan was a Holy place from where no one could go without clearing his doubts. Uncertainties of the mind were removed without the person speaking about them. The thoughts used to be still taking shape and the fulfillment would spontaneously come. Guru Arjan Dev ji, the fifth Master conveys this in the following verse:

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਰੇ || (ਪੰਨਾ ੧੩)

O Inner-knower, Searcher of Hearts, O Primal Being,
Architect of Destiny: please fulfill this yearning of my mind. (Page 13)

The Deputy Commissioner of Patna sahib who had heard about Sant ji of Nirmal Kutiya Johalan had DARSHAN of a perfect and absolute saint. The mysterious happening at the Kutiya moved him. He thought that he was fortunate to be in such Holy company.
