ESTABLISHING A GURDWARA IN VILLAGE GARHI

After leaving village SUGHWAAL, Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj went to the house of his devotee Bhai Shyam Singh in village Khakhi. Then he graced the house of Sardar Mal Singh in village BECHAAN. From here he went to village Nangal Farid (Garhi) and stayed at the orchard of Jagga Nambardar. Sant Baba ji sat under a mango tree. The tree had dead branches and fruit did not grow on it. Sant Baba ji’s presence brought a change in the tree. The tree became full of life once again and the austerity of Sant Baba ji caused the mangoes to grow again.

People came to have his DARSHAN from far and near. His simplicity and Holiness impressed them. Many of them became his devotees for life.

Garhi was a town inhabited mostly by the Sultanians. Some villagers started a rumour that the presence of this sadhu in the village would destroy their prosperity. A day came when the villagers stopped sending langar to Sant Baba ji. When asked about the stance of Sultanians, Sant Baba ji commented, “I have come here to fulfill my duty. I am least concerned about food.”

Bhai Harnam Singh was a devout follower of Sant Baba ji. He did not care for the attitude of other villagers. He took the duty of preparing and bringing langar for Sant Baba ji. Another associate Choudhri Santa Singh sometimes brought water in a pitcher for bathing Sant Baba ji. One morning when he reached the abode of Sant Baba ji, with the water pitcher on his head, he found the legs, arms and body of Sant Baba ji lying scattered on the ground.

He was gloomy and became very annoyed with the action of his fellow villagers. He came back to the village and started cursing them on their ludicrous action. Sant Baba ji did not deserve to be treated in this foolish manner, as he had not harmed anyone. He admonished his brethren and said, “You have taken the extreme step for which all of you should feel ashamed. The Holy saint had not done anything to you that such a drastic action was required on your part.”

The people of the village asked him, “Please let us know what has happened?”

Choudhri ji informed, “I have seen your foolish work with my own eyes. The arms, legs and body of Sant Baba ji are lying scattered on the ground.”

The villagers were astonished to hear this as no one had done anything. Later when some people visited the abode, they found Sant Baba ji in deep meditation. This incident left a lasting impact on the minds of the villagers. Everyone started respecting him and discussed freely about the level of the divinity of Sant Baba ji.

One day Sant Baba ji was requested to grace the village with his Holy feet. Sant Baba ji started walking with the devotees. He was happy to see beautiful residences constructed by the villagers. Sant Baba ji commented, “The Almighty who has given you such beautiful place to live in, does He also have a place for His residence?”

Some persons, who had a superstitious faith in worshipping tombs, opposed the move of establishing a Gurdwara. This was done at the back of Sant Baba ji while the same persons came to Sant Baba ji and requested that he should not leave the place till a Gurdwara was constructed.

Sant Baba ji understood such persons very well. He observed that since some of the people had reservation, the others were also not coming forward. One day Sant Baba ji said to Bhai Harnam Singh, “Bhai ji! Make arrangements for a long bamboo and prepare a colw - CHOLA for the NISHAN SAHIB.”

Bhai ji obeyed the orders of Sant Baba ji. A NISHAN SAHIB was prepared. Sant Baba ji took five Sikhs and went early in the morning to a place in the village, which was a common land (Sham Laat). Sant Baba Gian Singh ji performed Kirtan of Asa di Vaar on FolkIAW - DHOLKIAN and CYxy - CHHAINE. Karah Parshad was prepared and distributed after the Ardas. The Sikh slogan of ‘Bole so Nihal! Sat Sri Akal!’ was repeated five times to express happiness on the installation of NISHAN SAHIB.

Some bricks were brought and a foundation stone was laid by Sant Baba ji with his Holy hands. That day thirty-five persons accepted the ambrosial nectar of the two edged sword.

The result of the right direction shown by Sant Baba ji can be seen today. A beautiful Gurdwara dons the place. Every morning and evening, people of the village gather for daily prayers.

Sant Baba ji stayed here for six months. The construction of the Gurdwara was completed during this time.
