Nirmal Kutiya Johalan

ANIMALS IN THE CORRAL

Within the body, the Divine Lord is embodied. The body is the temple, the place of pilgrimage, and the soul is the pilgrim. One learns this lesson from Holy saints of the caliber of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. Those places are truly holy, where truth and honesty prevails. Dishonesty, selfishness and falsehood do not even come close to such places. Many souls in search of a peaceful environment came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. They considered themselves fortunate that the pilgrimage of the soul in their bodies received the fragrance of truth and they led fruitful lives.

All kinds of souls were liberated at Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. The sadhus who were in the Kutiya had come there after leaving the comfort of their homes, love of the family and friends and thoughts of material wealth. Their living under the graceful eyes of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj definitely had some kind of correlation with their previous births.

Many animals, birds lived in the corral of Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. Cows, horses, bullocks, dog’s, cats etc. lived in the pen like one big family as if all were encircled with the blessings of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj.

The recitation of Gurbani, repetition of God’s Name, Kirtan and discourses was also heard by these animals. In the evening, after the recitation of REHRAS Sahib, conch, gong and trumpet are blown and these animals join in with their own sounds. They try to get into the musical rhythm of the musical instruments. The dogs don’t bark at this time but crescendo the pitch in their voices instead.

The blowing of the conch, gong and a trumpet in the evening at Nirmal Kutiya Johalan has a historical background. During the times of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, some of his Sikhs were in the trenches defending the territory in the battlefields. These Sikhs could not participate in reciting Rehras Sahib. They requested Guru Sahib to guide and suggest some alternate since they were unable to follow the daily discipline. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib could easily understand their dilemma. He suggested that when in the evening they heard the sound of the blowing conch, gong and trumpet, they should stand in the trenches, with folded hands in respect and recite ‘Satnam Waheguru’.

The tradition of sounding these instruments is being carried forward at Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. These sounds also convey the prosperity of the Kutiya.

Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj visited the corral daily. The animals waited for him to turn up. Different voices greeted Sant Baba ji in the pen. Every animal expressed its love for Sant Baba ji in one manner or the other. Sant Baba ji touched the animals with his stick or called it by a particular name.

When Sant Baba ji came out of the corral all these animals became silent and peaceful. All these animals were privileged as everyday the divine eyes of Sant Baba ji fell on them.
