Nirmal Kutiya Johalan

AN ARMY BRIGADIER JOINS IN THE SEWA

Army officers serving in Jalandhar Cantt were regular visitors to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. Brigadier Jaswant Singh with his family frequently came along with Giani Lakshmi Narain Singh (Retd SSP) to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan to pay their homage to Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj.

During the days when the leveling work of the approach road was going on, Brigadier Sahib and Giani ji came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. Both touched the feet of Sant Baba ji. Before they could sit, Sant Baba ji addressed Nambardar Didar Singh, sitting nearby, “Nambardar ji! It will be good if SARKAR also participates in the SEWA. Also show them the path till the Railway tracks.”

Giani ji, Brigadier Sahib, Nambardar ji and Sant Baba Gian Singh ji all went together to the spot where the work was going on. Both Giani ji and Brigadier Sahib joined the others in this social service. They were enjoying the SEWA like any other devotee there.

Thereafter Nambardar ji asked them for inspecting the remaining site till the Railway crossing near the Bolina Doaba Railway Station. Sant Baba Gian Singh ji, Giani ji, Brigadier Sahib and Nambardar ji traveled a short distance in the car and could not go further as many deep pits were present on both sides of the narrow path. People of village Bolina and village Patara used to say that no one would dare think of converting this uneven place into a road. It was really a tough task.

Brigadier Sahib requested Sant Baba Gian Singh ji on the way back, “Maharaj ji! The Army is equipped with construction equipment for making roads. If Maharaj permits me, I would like to carry out this work.”

The request was conveyed to Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj at the Kutiya who said in a matter of fact way, “Such a service comes in the lap of those who are fortunate and undertake to do it selflessly.”

Brigadier Sahib understood the deep meanings in the words of Sant Baba ji. Sant Baba ji thereafter ordered for serving of milk and snacks to the sangat and then took leave of them.

Next day, Brigadier Sahib along with an officer proficient in the construction of roads came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. Sant Baba ji was informed about the official and Nambardar ji was asked to accompany them to inspect the entire path.

They came first to the spot where the sangat was happily engaged in the work. The officials were impressed with the passion and enthusiasm with which the work was going on. The entire portion of land was surveyed and the team came back to Kutiya. The height of the railway track was almost ten feet from the ground level. There were deep pits on both sides of the path near the track. The team members understood that no matter how many hands were involved the individuals could not carry out the actual work to settle the mud for proper leveling. They decided that machinery would need to be used for the purpose.

The official explained his plan for the construction of the road and Brigadier Sahib conveyed the same to Sant Baba ji.

Sant Baba ji said, “The supervision of the work will be done by Sant Baba Gian Singh ji.”

Three bulldozers and a crane, along with 500 Army Jawans and some trucks reached the place, the next day. A pond near the Bolina Doaba Railway Station was the first to be filled up. A water pump was used to pump out the water from the pond and then the pond was filled with mud. The filling of the deep pits then started. A slope was made to cover the distance between the ground level and the height of the Railway track. This having been completed the work on the actual road began.

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji was seen supervising the work and stayed at the site for the entire day. He used to sit sometimes on the mud heaps.

The Jawans had their own arrangement for food and water. Brigadier Sahib came in his jeep to see the progress. He sometimes came in his uniform. Sant Baba ji felt very happy on seeing him in uniform. Brigadier Sahib joined his staff in the service after folding his pants. The Army personnel were motivated by him to perform their work sincerely and with all humility.

The Army personnel were able to prepare the road by working daily, in a very short time.
