Bhai Sarwan Singh of village Jiyan was a devotee of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. He performed SEWA of lighting incense sticks and Jyot during the Sri Akhand Path Sahib. He had a brother by the name of Bhai Ram Singh. Both had tailoring shops at Barri Bassi.
Once Sarwan Singh got work in a nearby village and did not go to his shop at Barri Bassi. This work was to be completed in fifteen days. During those days a theft occurred in the shop of his brother Ram Singh. The thieves took away five sewing machines from the shop. The Police was informed of the theft. The investigating officer of the Police asked Ram Singh if he doubted anyone. Ram Singh blamed his brother for the crime.
Sarwan Singh was caught and put behind bars as a suspect. Bhai Sarwan Singh had not done any crime but since his brother had blamed him he could not do anything about it.
Bhai Sarwan Singh prayed to Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj, inside the Police Station. He addressed Sant Baba ji and said, “Maharaj ji! You know that I am not at fault. Please save me from these scoundrels. Please bless me. My dignity is in your hands.”
During those days there used to be a special staff to beat the thieves to get the truth out of them. The thieves were made to sit in a row and the staff starting from one end continued beating till the last man in the row had received the thrasing. Bhai Sarwan Singh was the last man in the row that day. He was sitting near a wall. When the staff tried to box him on his face, the closed fist instead of hitting him, struck the wall. The wrist of the policeman got dislocated. He went back saying that he would thrash him the next day.
Bhai Sarwan Singh prayed again to Sant Baba ji, “Maharaj ji! You know that I was working in another village during the theft. Why my brother is blaming me is not known to me. Please make him understand the correct position.”
Next day the beating staff was to come again. That day the in charge of the Police Station got his transfer orders. The entire staff was asked to join the farewell party. The staff 320 became busy for the send off preparations and for attending the party. No one came that day to beat the suspects.
The staff investigating the theft of the sewing machines was convinced from their investigation that Bhai ji was not guilty. It was therefore not proper to detain him in the Police Station. He was therefore released.
His house is filled with all sorts of articles; God’s servants never suffer pain. (Page 395)
Bhai Sarwan Singh came to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan, to thank Sant Baba ji for his benevolence. He narrated the incident to Sant Baba ji.
Sant Baba ji said, “Kalgian Wala (Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib) protects us everywhere but we fail to notice his generosity. Our difficulty is that we do not let the Master hold our hand. If we allow him to hold our hand, then the Master will not let us pass through any kind of difficulty.”
Sardar Sarwan Singh understood the deep philosophy explained by Sant Baba ji. He and his family members accepted the ambrosial nectar of the two edged sword. He happily gave his hand to the Tenth Master. He remains in the same state even now.
