A COBRA GUARDS THE TAPASVI

During one of the winter seasons, a young farmer of village Fatehpur told his father before going off to sleep, “I will take the buffaloes to plough the fields after midnight. I will be back in the morning.”

The father cautioned the son, “It will not be easy for you to do so.”

The son replied, “It is a full moon’s night and everything is visible. The buffaloes have rested and are fresh. There won’t be any problem. Don’t worry! Everything will be fine.”

The father agreed and said, “OK! As you wish.”

The young farmer reached the fields around 3.00am. He yoked the buffaloes and prepared them for the cultivating work. The land was clearly visible in the moonlight. He started with his work. His fields were quite close to the dwelling of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. He worked enthusiastically controlling his buffaloes. A time came when he came closer to the Tap Asthan of Sant Baba ji.

He saw a cobra sitting with its fangs open in front of the buffaloes. He shifted the buffaloes to the right to bye pass the snake, but the cobra moved and faced the buffaloes. He tried to shift again but the cobra came in front of him. He became frightened. He quickly turned back with the buffaloes and hurriedly covered the cultivated area. On reaching the end of the field he turned back to see whether the cobra was following him. He saw the cobra lying on the ground. It had not moved from its position.

He reached home early in the morning and found his father awake. His father asked him, “How is it that you have finished tilling so soon. It is only 5.00am. You must not have covered the entire fields?”

The young farmer said, “No! I could not complete the work.” He then narrated the incident of the cobra.

The father on hearing the incident said, “The presence of the cobra has prevented you from committing a sin.”

The young farmer was confused and asked, “How was I committing a sin?”

The father explained to him, “Sant Baba Basant Singh ji’s abode is near our fields. He must have been meditating. These sadhus do not sleep and they often meditate through out the night. The cobra did not want you to disturb his prayers. In case you had disturbed the holy saint, you would have committed a sin.”

The boy understood the deep meaning of what had happened. He said, “That means the cobra was guarding Sant Baba ji.”

The father replied, “Yes! These creatures are far more intelligent and understanding than humans. They easily follow the path of virtue. The cobra was guarding the holy saint so as to save him from any one disturbing him.”

The young farmer said, “Animals can recognize Braham Gianis. This is quite a lesson for me. I pray and seek the blessings of Sant Baba ji.”

The father as well as his son narrated this incident to many in the village. Many villagers became devotees of Sant Baba ji. Three brothers namely Chandu, Nandu and Mangu were impressed by the holy glance of Sant Baba ji and became his devotees. They daily brought water and bathed Sant Baba ji. They also brought drinking water for his consumption.

The three brothers continued performing this service of water till the time Sant Baba ji lived at this place. After Sant Baba ji left the village, the brothers continued to visit the site daily. They bowed their heads on the spot, keeping the image of Sant Baba ji in their minds and lighted a DIYA (A mud lamp).

They felt the presence of Sant Baba ji. They performed this service without any motive but only from the love and respect they had for the great saint. This was the significance of the silent teaching they had received from Sant Baba ji.
