Nirmal Kutiya Johalan

A BRAHAM GIANI LOOKS AT FRIENDS AND ENEMIES EVENLY

For Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj there was no difference between a person who loved him and the one who despised him. Sri Guru Granth Sahib defines such a Holy person as follows:

The God-conscious being is always unattached,
as the lotus in the water remains detached.
The God-conscious being is always unstained,
like the sun, which gives its comfort and warmth to all. (Page 272)

AND

The God-conscious being has a steady patience,
like the earth, which is dug up by one, and anointed with sandal paste by another.
This is the quality of the God-conscious being:
O Nanak, his inherent nature is like a warming fire. ||1|| (Page 272)

Once, Sant Baba Gian Singh ji went to village Bhojowal to collect food as alms. When he had collected the food and was returning, Amar Singh of the village stopped him. Amar Singh snatched the food from Sant Baba Gian Singh ji and threw it towards his cattle.

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji returned to the Kutiya empty handed.

Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj asked him, “What happened? You have not brought any langar to serve the sadhus and the sangat.”

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji informed Sant Baba ji, “The food was collected as alms from the villagers but Bhai Amar Singh snatched it and gave it to his cattle. I therefore returned empty handed.”

Sant Baba ji asked him, “Santa! Did you say anything to Bhai Amar Singh on his rude action?”

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji replied, “Maharaj ji! I kept quiet and did not retaliate.”

Sant Baba ji said, “Santa! You did the right thing by keeping quiet.”

In absence of food none of the sadhus of the Kutiya had anything to eat that day.

Sadhus of the Kutiya are really different from ordinary human beings. They can remain without food for many days. Sometimes they boiled tree leaves and relished the concoction.

Amar Singh reacted in a similar manner with every sadhu who passed by his farm. Not a single sadhu said anything to him and returned to the Kutiya. They remained impassive to the actions of Amar Singh like a lotus flower in the water remains detached.

Baba Farid ji says:

Farid, answer evil with goodness; do not fill your mind with anger.
Your body shall not suffer from any disease,
and you shall obtain everything. ||78|| (Page 1381)

The daughter of Amar Singh was married to a boy from the village of Moranwali. The family of the husband was devotee of Sant Baba Hari Singh ji Maharaj of Kaharpur. Sant Baba Hari Singh ji and Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj were both Gurbhais. Both were cemented to each other through their souls.

The parents of the husband took the couple to the Dera of Sant Baba Hari Singh ji to seek his blessings for a happy married life. Sant Baba Hari Singh ji happily gave his blessings and asked, “Which village does the bride belong to?”

The father of the boy replied, “Maharaj ji! She is from village Bhojowal.”

Sant Baba Hari Singh ji said, “Near by to this village is Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. Does the family of the bride go to the Kutiya for DARSHAN of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj?”

The girl replied, “Maharaj ji! Nirmal Kutiya Johalan is prospering but my father does not have any faith.” She explained about the ill treatment being meted out to the Sadhus of the Kutiya.

Sant Baba Hari Singh ji said, “This is a grave mistake. If God is living nearby and if one does not get His Grace, then one is really unlucky.”

Sant Baba Hari Singh ji advised the father, “Send the girl back to her parents. Such a family, which troubles sadhus, should not have any relations with you. If she wants to live here then her family should go to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan and seek forgiveness from Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj and in future should serve the sadhus of the Kutiya with humbleness.”

The newly wed girl was informed of the instructions of Sant Baba Hari Singh ji and advised to go and get the blessings of Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj. She was sent back to her parents.

On the way to her village the girl made her plans. She reached her home and without waiting for pleasantries, she asked her mother to give her wheat to grind. The mother asked her why she required the wheat.

She told her mother, “I have to prepare langar for Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj and take it to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan.”

Her mother was astonished by her daughter’s reply. She admonished her and said, “Are you in a mood to get a beating from your father? How can I permit you to prepare langar and take it to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan? If I allow you I will also get the beating.”

The daughter said, “Then mother, be prepared to keep me with you here in this house for the rest of my life.”

The mother was curious to know the details. She was told the entire happening at Kaharpur Dera. The mother was shocked to hear this and shared the information with her husband. Since there was no other alternative Sardar Amar Singh permitted his wife and daughter to prepare langar.

Bhai Gurdas ji states in his Vaar 34, Pauri 3:

ਸਰੁ ਸੰਨ੍ਹੈ ਆਗਾਸ ਨੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਥੈ ਆਵੈ | ਦੁਹੀ ਸਰਾਈਂ ਜਰਦ ਰੂ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ||੩||

An arrow shot towards the sky, comes back to hit the person on his forehead.
People who do not face the Guru repent on being ashamed of their acts.

The daughter and her mother prepared langar with all their love. They placed the langar in a basket and carried the basket to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan. Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj and Sant Baba Gian Singh ji were both present together. Sant Baba ji asked, “Santa! See who has brought langar?”

Sant Baba Gian Singh ji informed, “Maharaj ji! The family of Bhai Amar Singh of Bhojowal has brought the langar.”

Braham Giani Sant Baba Basant Singh ji Maharaj instructed Sant Baba Gian Singh ji, “Santa! Ring the langar bell. Distribute the entire langar to the sangat.”

The instructions were obeyed without a second thought.

Sant Baba ji ignored the past mistakes of Sardar Amar Singh. The benevolent saint accepted the service rendered by the family.

The girl was happy that Sant ji Maharaj had accepted her langar. She went to her in laws at Moranwali and informed about the acceptance of her service by the kind Sant ji Maharaj at Nirmal Kutiya Johalan.

The whole family came to the Kaharpur Dera of Sant Baba Hari Singh ji Maharaj and informed about the acceptance of the service. Sant Baba Hari Singh ji was pleased with the information and blessed the couple. The girl started her married life in the in-laws house.

The result of Sant Baba ji’s grace was that Bhai Amar Singh started coming to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan and stopped giving any sort of trouble to anyone. The family of Bhai Amar Singh is still attached to Nirmal Kutiya Johalan.
